For most Dallas homes the answer is every 3 to 5 years — but North Texas is not an average climate, and some homes need it sooner. Here is how to know where yours falls.
Why Dallas is harder on ducts
Your AC runs close to nine months a year here. Every hour it runs, air cycles through the ductwork, carrying Texas dust, cedar and ragweed pollen, pet dander, and whatever construction kicked up nearby. All of it settles in the lines — and gets recirculated through every room, every day.
Clean sooner if any of these apply
- You just renovated. Drywall dust travels deep into duct lines and keeps blowing back for months.
- You just moved in. You inherited the previous owner’s dust, dander, and habits.
- Pets at home. Dander and hair build up fast, especially with multiple animals.
- Allergies flare indoors. If symptoms get worse when the AC kicks on, the ducts are a prime suspect.
- Dust returns days after cleaning. When shelves are dusty again by the weekend, the source is usually upstream.
The honest test
Pull a supply register and look inside with your phone flashlight. A thin gray film is normal wear. A carpet of dust, clumps around the register, or musty smell when the system starts — that is a system asking for a cleaning.
