WHY IT MATTERS
To a bird, a squirrel, a raccoon, or a swarm of wasps or bees, an uncapped flue is a sheltered, warm shaft that beats any tree. They move in, build nests, and sometimes get stuck, and the result is a blocked flue, scratching or buzzing in the walls, a foul smell, and a real fire risk from all that dry nesting material sitting above the firebox. Some of it is a health issue too, since droppings, insects, and debris don’t belong in the air you breathe.
We remove the animals, birds, and stinging insects along with their nests, clear the debris they left behind, and then close the door behind them with a chimney cap installation so it doesn’t happen again. Where nesting fouled the flue, a chimney cleaning finishes the job so it’s safe to burn.

Yes. We assess what’s in the flue first and remove them without harm wherever we can, and make sure none are left trapped inside. The goal is to get them out and keep them out, not to hurt them.
An open flue is a warm, sheltered shaft, basically an ideal hollow tree. Birds and squirrels nest there, especially in nesting season. The fix is removing them and capping the flue so the next one can’t follow.
It is. Dry twigs and nesting material are very flammable and sit right above the firebox, and they also block the draft so smoke backs into the room. Both are reasons to clear it before you burn.
A properly fitted cap with mesh is what stops it from recurring. Removing the animals without capping just leaves the door open for the next ones, which is why we finish with a cap.
Possibly. A foul smell can mean an old nest, droppings, or an animal that didn’t make it out. We inspect the flue to find the source and clear whatever’s causing it.
